Refresh Your Jewelry

April 1, 2007

Hello Everyone,

I think Spring has finally sprung and everything is coming
up tulips. The daffodils, hyacinth and tulips with all
their many colors just seem to be smiling at you. Having
cleaned up the gardens from winter I can now see areas that
need to be refreshed. I will be heading out to the
nurseries soon. This is always a fun time for me!

Moving on, I have a question for you. Are you having a
foreign affair with your jewelry? It's time to make some
changes and freshen your sterling silver jewelry with a new
look. Shades of brown seem to be a popular fashion color
this season. Adding in silver chains with a green garnet
crystal over top adds sparkle. Try turquoise and silver
beads over a simple sterling chain for a splash of color
yet keeping it light and airy looking. Pair a rose quartz
necklace with a pink top. You got it, you have just gone
from drab to fab!

Some Silver Jewelry Knowledge:

Silver has been used for jewelry since 3500 BC when the
Egyptians created ornaments out of silver. The word
"sterling" is short for "Easterlings" a form of money used
in 12th century England.
The demand for silver jewelry continues to grow. It can be
elegant yet trendy. There are many unique designs that can
reveal each one of our individual personalitites. Silver is
a wonderful neutral color trend today.
Sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% copper. The
copper is necessary for durability and strength since 100%
pure silver is too soft to hold up on its own. The 7.5%
copper has proved to be its best companion, which has
improved the metal's hardness and durability without
affecting its beautiful color. The small amount of copper
added to sterling has very little affect on the metals
value. Instead the price of the silver item is affected by
the labor involved in making the item, the skill of the
craftsperson and the intricacy of the design.
